This Space Is Ours

We’ve been big fans of Melbourne’s pop/punk quintet This Space Is Ours for some time now and are delighted to be premiering the video for their latest track, the moving and honest “All The Things I’ve Been Avoiding”.  The track follows on from “Apology” and “Gone In May”, which were released earlier in the year.

The tender and gorgeous vocals of Gemma Dunsmore transfix and build the narrative with moody guitars that build into a punchy and energetic explosion. The pared-back track showcases the range of This Space Is Ours.

About the lyrics, Gemma writes: “The lyrics are written about mental health struggles and the gruelling path to getting better; when you’ve come to terms with there being something wrong but only just begun the journey to fix it. Over time, the personal meaning of this song has transformed for me. When I first wrote it, it was almost an apology, as if to say, “I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I’m trying.” I’ve since been diagnosed with being on the Autism spectrum, and now when I sing it, it feels more like I’m saying something along the lines of, “there is nothing wrong with me, this is who I am and I’m still learning about myself.” –

Matt Bird directed the video, which deftly matches the lyrical themes of the song, with it cutting between Gemma singing in her bedroom and making her dream a reality by singing with This Space Is Ours. There is an intimacy to the bedroom scenes that is powerful and evocative.

The band states: “This video concept is the Frankenstien’s monster of both Gemma’s and director Matt Bird’s ideas. Overall, it covers the idea of making the life you want a reality, then remembering how badly you wanted it once you’re there. Cutting between scenes of Gemma doing her own makeup then performing with a hairbrush in her bedroom with scenes of the band performing in a studio with a team doing hair and makeup. The connecting element is the fog that appears in both locations, implying they are part of the same dream.”

Enjoy our premiere of the video of “All The Things I’ve Been Avoiding” before its release tomorrow.
