Guest Playlist: Bad Pony share their favourite up and coming bands

Bad Pony

Bad Pony have just dropped their album, Forever Up & Coming, and it’s hard to believe that it is their debut long play record. They’ve long been a favourite at the AU, and we have have celebrated their various milestones along the way..

On the path to this release they’ve performed twelve national tours, three international showcases, including performing at SWSW, delivered two EP’s (Deficiency in 2018 and Limbo in 2015), and a stack of singles. So, yes, it has been a long time coming.

They knuckled down and crafted Forever Up & Coming over the past three years. It is an album that wears its indie-pop-rock credentials proudly. The band is well known for creating songs that examine the human condition, in all its glory. They cover the spectrum of emotions, from love to loss, depression, addiction, religion, joy and much more.

The stories on the album are delivered passionately and with conviction. If you love the exuberance and energy of bands such as The Wombats and Foals, then this is going to give you much joy.

Do crank it up and enjoy the beauty of Forever Up & Coming. The band has some album launch shows in February, in Newcastle, Sydney and Wollongong. The dates are below (and they are free, so make sure you buy some merch when you there!)

To celebrate the release of Forever Up & Coming, Jarred from Bad Pony has curated a list of ten of his favourite up and coming bands, with a track from each. Give it a listen, and discovery your next favourite band.

Subcult – “Bubblegum Hair”
Punky poppy goodness. Good luck getting this out of your head.

Matthew McMahon – “Table For Twenty”
Big Portugal. The Man, Mike Snow, Jack White vibes on this. Sounds like a weird combo but me oh my this is a cool song.

Lili-Violet – “Anxiety”
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Lili on her upcoming EP. Love the chanty bridge in this one.

Munted Chunts – “Boronia Boys”
Bogan tinged punk at its very best. I love the ocker storytelling behind the Chunts’ tunes. Brilliant stuff.

90ivy – “Shoes On The Dash”
That opening melody Dying to play a show with these incredible songwriters.

The Sunday Estate – “Lost & Disappointed”
Pop done perfectly. ‘Nuff said.

Ruby Humberstone – “Loose Change”
I studied music with Ruby and I was always drawn to her voice. It really hits me in the feels and keeps me hanging on every word she delivers. Which is just as well because her lyrics are wonderful.

Emotion Picture – “Head On”
Vibe, lyrics, harmony, darkness, swagger. Oooooooof.

Nick Keogh – “Ketamine”
Too many awesome lyrical moments in this tune to mention. Also Nick somehow manages to make coughing cool. Hat’s off.

Swim State – “Bedtime Story”
This song makes me want to get OUT of bed. Those chorusy guitars and rhythmic hits!!
