Album Review: Boy & Bear – Lost Dreams (2023 EP)

With the tenth anniversary of their smash hit sophomore album Harlequin Dream having just passed, Aussie indie icons Boy & Bear are celebrating their milestone by releasing an EP consisting of three previously unreleased tracks written in their Harlequin Dream era. Lost Dreams is out today, and I’m here to take you through it track by track.

Kicking off the EP is “Abraham”, a track that graced our ears a few weeks prior to the EP’s launch. As the song unfolds, you’re immediately enveloped in a wave of nostalgia, as it skilfully captures the quintessential essence of the Harlequin Dream era. This musical gem exudes a classic indie vibe, characterised by its infectious groove and those classic Dave Hosking vocals. A delightful fusion of folk and pop elements, “Abraham” manages to transcend time, feeling as though it could have been freshly penned and meticulously mixed today.

“Mexico” takes the helm next, offering a harmonious blend of nostalgia and contemporary sensibilities. Instrumentally, this track takes a more minimalist approach, affording ample space for the mellow vocals to shine brilliantly. This dreamy composition conjures images of idyllic summer days, serving as the perfect sonic backdrop for a sun-soaked adventure. It envelops you like a warm, comforting embrace, gradually building up before gently descending into a serene and soft outro, leaving you utterly entranced.

And last, but most certainly not least, we have “Eye of the Canyon.” This track injects a dose of upbeat energy into the EP, harkening back to the classic folk-rock roots that Boy & Bear are celebrated for. Throughout the song’s duration, an infectious vitality prevails, adorned with playful piano melodies and electrifying guitar riffs. “Eye of the Canyon” keeps your spirits high, ensuring an exhilarating musical journey from start to finish.

As we conclude this journey through Boy & Bear’s Lost Dreams EP, it’s worth reflecting on the incredible serendipity that these tracks have been unearthed after nearly a decade. Lost and forgotten for nearly ten years, their reemergence feels nothing short of miraculous. What’s even more astonishing is that they haven’t undergone any re-recording; instead, they stand as authentic time capsules from the Harlequin Dream era, preserving the magic and emotion of that moment in musical history.

These rediscovered gems remind us of the enduring power of music to transport us across time, evoking cherished memories while offering fresh, timeless experiences. Boy & Bear’s Lost Dreams is a testament to the enduring allure of their sound and the indelible mark they’ve left on the indie music landscape.
