Oppo, which has just overtaken Huawei as China’s number one smartphone brand, is looking to keep their recent score of wins rolling with their new flagship Find X3 series. Much like the X2 series before it, the forthcoming release will be split into Lite 5G, Neo 5G and Pro 5G models – Pro obviously sitting at the top-tier.
If you’ve paid any attention to the AU review’s tech section last year, you’ll know that we’ve been big fans of what Oppo have brought to table, particularly with the value proposition of the Find X2 Lite, and the powerhouse performance of the Find X2 Pro.
At a special Sydney launch event last week, the increasingly popular brand announced just how they are going to best the Find X2 Pro, news so exciting that even swoll sea creatures like the turtle pictured below were interested.
So how are they going to top it? Well, for starters, they’ve gone and made the first smartphone with a camera system led by not one, but two primary 50MP lenses.
For the Find X3 Pro 5G, Oppo are going to go even harder with an innovative quad-camera system, graced by two 50MP wide and ultra-wide snappers, a 13MP telephoto lens, and 3MP microlens. Plus, they’ve tightened their focus on visual experience with a 10-bit display capable of one billion colours. Compare this to the usual 8-bit display and 16 million colours that most current smartphones have.
This new flagship will have a Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 888 5G sitting under the hood, so its easy to expect a show of force and efficiency from the phone, which runs Android 11 overlaid with ColorOS 11.2. Although the headline really is the camera system, as it almost always is with Oppo.
With better software in place, Oppo has been able to kit the flagship phone out with some truly promising photo and video capabilities. As mentioned above, this has two primary 50MP cameras on the rear, while making use of a Sony IMX 766 imaging sensor and 10bit image and video processing. This brings the phone much closer to DSLR-quality (although, be realistic here, it’s still a phone).
Oppo promises higher quality video with wider dynamic range and colour depth, which should make content creators all weak at the knees. Given the brand has always leaned heavily on user-friendly customisation, there are also more options when it comes to on-board post-production, which should hopefully be even tighter this time around and eliminate the need for additional software all together.
With 10bit processing, 4K imaging, a broader dynamic colour range, and log format video recording means better manual control over the specifics of photography, including ISO, white balance, shutter speed, and focus.
Anything you snap or record will also look sharper thanks to a full-path Colour Management System which, as mentioned above, can store and display photos and videos up to 1 billion colours. This extends to anything displayed on the screen, from apps and games, to zippy entertainment with a 120Hz refresh rate and QHD+ resolution.
And it wouldn’t really be an Oppo phone without a strong battery. The 4,500mAh juicier should easily last a day, and then some, alongside the world’s fastest 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 Flash Charge. This will be the first Australian device compatible with Oppo’s 30W AirVOOC Wireless Flash Charge and reserve charging system, promising 0 to 100% in 80 minutes.
Those wanting to step down and mingle with the rest of the Find X3 family should find a nice balance between price and performance, if the previous series is anything to go by.
The Find X3 Neo also sports a quad-camera system, but reduces the refresh rate to 90Hz on the AMOLED, HDR10+ compatible display. You’ve also got 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 Flash Charge, so that’s a nice bonus for a mid-range set.
The Find X3 Lite is the most accessible of the punch, making use of a Snapdragon 765G, quad-camera system, AI imaging, and 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 Flash Charge.
