While it felt inevitable, it is now official; Sony has announced that they will be releasing a new, slimmer version of the PlayStation 5. While it’s right around the corner in the US, hitting store shelves in November, we won’t see these down under until early next year.
These new models will bear the same specs as the launch consoles, but will now include a slightly larger 1TB SSD, as opposed to the 825GB SSD found in those former models.
According to Sony’s latest blog post, the newer consoles have “been reduced in volume by more than 30%”, and will also weigh less, although that’s not saying much if you’ve ever held the powerhouse of a unit that is the launch PlayStation 5.
The slimmer design will include slits on each side of the console, with the right side now allowing for an Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Drive, which can now be purchased separately and added to these newer digital consoles for an additional A$159.95. It’s certainly a nice adjustment, knowing you’re not locked into either option should you change your mind down the track.
The newer consoles will cost a little more on average when they hit shelves, with the disc-drive version costing A$799.95 and the digital version costing A$679.95. It’s also worth noting that the vertical stand is no longer included, with the newer consoles coming with a redesigned horizontal stand instead. The vertical stand can be purchased separately for A$49.95.
